Family name Weldon

I am asked several times a month if there is any connection between the Surname Weldon and the village. As far as I can determine, there are no records showing anyone by the name of Weldon ever living in the village. It is however possible that the family adopted the village name.......

Family name Richardson

I am researching my family tree and have established that my ancestors were carpenters in Weldon from at least the late 18th century through to the late 19th century, when the family moved to Kettering. In the 1848/9 trades directory there were four carpenters listed in Weldon - all of them Richardsons! If anyone has any information at all relating to Richardsons or carpentry in Weldon I would be delighted to hear from you. Thanks for your help. Daniel danielrichardson74@hotmail.co.uk

Re Surnames: PHILIP & VICCARS

  • My ancestor John Philip was a minister at the Congregational Church at Little Weldon, until his death in January 1837. His wife Frances, daughter of Thomas Viccars of Brigstock, died in May 1843. They are both buried in the Congregational church grounds at Weldon. They had a number of children, the oldest would have been about 17 years old at the time of his mother's death. I am seeking any information about what happened to the orphaned children of John and Frances Philip after the death of their parents. Perhaps someone with access to local archives and cemetery records can help me. (Im doing this research from Australia.)I'm also hoping the information I am providing may help others with their research. The children's names are: John Viccars Philip, b.1826(later married Elizabeth Mayes in Sydney, Australia), Frances Chater Philip, Thomas Dash Philip(later joined his uncle's publishing firm - George Philip Son & Nephew), Mary Ann Philip (later married Samuel Blackmore in Australia), Eliza Philip, Margaret Philip, Gratitude Philip (this name is from christening records - possibly the same child as Mercy Philip, who died in infancy and is buried with her parents).

Re Surname: SPRIGGS

  • From the Spriggs entries in the Weldon census of 1851 & 1871 most of the men appeared to have been Ag Labs apart from this one family so how they came to be involved in parchment making I don't know, nor do i know what took Thomas from Weldon to Potton.

I would be interested in contact with any Spriggs still in the area who may be able to help, or may be connected in any way as at the moment I really only have a direct line.

The names I'm particularly interested in are highlighted in bold, but I would be interested in any information about siblings etc & how this family relates to the other Weldon SPRIGGS.  On the 1851 census I couldn't tell what Charles' father-in-law's surname was but I now think it was FARREN/FARRIN based on entries for 1881 & also the burial record of a William Farrin SPRIGGS in 1835 aged 1.

Should anyone have a connection or interest I can provide a family tree as I have it in gedcom or can send a printed one snailmail.

Thankyou for your help & interest.

Re Surname: RUSSELL

  • Dear David, I have just seen a Printout of the 1851 Census for Weston,Lincolnshire and discovered that my G.G.G Grandfather,Thomas RUSSELL,who was then a widower aged 74 years, living in Weston, stated his Birth place as Weldon,Northants and am wondering if you could advise me as to who I might contact regarding Church/Parish records for 1777 in an effort to try and find out more about the family. Thomas was an Agriculture worker so it is possible that his parents moved to Lincolnshire in that employment, I know that Thomas married a Margaret DOWSE or DAWSE in Spalding 19th April 1810 and that they had 10 children. Thomas and his wife are buried in Weston,Lincolnshire. I note from your 1881 census list that there were RUSSELL's in the village at that time. Thanking you in anticipation . Yours truly....Len.Watkins....Victoria,B.C,Canada Lenwat@shaw.ca

Re Surnames:BURDETT, GILBY & HARRISON

  • Dear David, I am trying to trace decendants and relatives of my Great Grandmother Eliza Burdett born 1846 in Weldon. She married William Gray of Melton Mowbray and they spent their married life in Leicester. I would also like to establish the relationship of Clara who married Jack Gilby, was she Clara Burdett? who in 1881 was living in Markfield? Jack and Clara kept 'The George' in Weldon and had a daughter Alice who I understand married a Harrison! Any Information would be much appreciated.

I have recently transcribed the 1881 Census for Weldon and this can be seen on my website at:- http://brianmcneill2.homestead.com/files/records/index.htm

Many thanks, Brian McNeill Melton Mowbray

Re Surnames: CLUFF and CURTIS

  • I am currently researching my own family history and would therfore be interested in hearing from anyone who may have any information of interest connected to the "Cluff" family, and/or the Curtis/Seth Curtis family (who i believe owned a local papermill), all of which had connections with the Weldon, Kettering, Corby and the Wellingborough areas. I also believe that there are a number of members of the Cluff Family in Weldon Church yard. Does anyone know the full name of this Church?. Please feel free to contact me by e-mail: sandycluff@hotmail.com . I look forward to hearing from you. Miss Sandy Cluff

Re Surname: PYWELL

  • I'm researching my Pywell ancestors whom I've dated to the late-1600s in Great Weldon: William and Elizabeth Pywell had nine children baptised between 1687-1704. My particular line moved to Leicestershire in the 1700s, but I'm keen to hear about any other Pywells in Weldon and Northamptonshire.

Re Surname: MASON

Dear David

I would be absolutely delighted if you were able to put a piece on the
website stating my interest in the MASON family, together with my email
address.

Samuel Mason m. Mary
Children:
    1789 John      died: 1801
    1791 Elizabeth
    1795 Thomas    m. Elizabeth   d. 1867 Luddington-in-the-Brook
    1797 Mary
1799 Samuel (son of Samuel Mason and Elizabeth !)
1804 Ann     (daughter of Samuel Mason and Mary!)
1808 William (son of Samuel Mason and Mary!) These last 3 entries
need further research!! as it looks as if Samuel married three times,(or
strayed briefly with Elizabeth?)

Samuel Mason was my 4GG Grandfather. My mother was born a Mason in
Wellingborough, NTH.

I have sent information about your website to another Weldon researcher in
Australia.
Thank you for your help.

Having recently discovered that a casual interest in your family history can rapidly develop into a consuming passion, I thought it might be a good idea to add a genealogy forum page to the website.

You are welcome to exchange information, and requests details, of Weldon families here. Please email your messages etc. to me, and I'll post them regularly. I would appreciate the results of your work being made available, so that all the village can benefit.

Please note I can only place messages onto the website - I do not have the time & resources to do research for you - the website already takes up more time than I dare calculate!!

To start the ball rolling, I am a descendant of the family of Austs that moved to Weldon from Corsham, Wiltshire between 1889 and 1890, to work in the stone quarries.

Here is the family that moved to Weldon - my grateful thanks to Peter Smith for this information.

(Other Aust relatives - please contact me if you would like the full fruits of Peter's research - the Austs family tree dating back to 1555 in Corsham!!)

Aust - Generation No. 10

 15.  HENRY10 AUST (CHARLES9, DAVID8, WILLIAM7, WILLIAM6, ANTHONY5, JOHN4, URIAH3, JOHN2, EDWARD1) was born 1847, Baptism: 21 February 1847, Corsham, and died 1922 in Kettering R.D.. Occupation: Quarryman.   He married ELIZABETH ...... Abt. 1879.

Children of HENRY AUST and ELIZABETH ...... are:

16.              i.       CHARLES GEORGE11 AUST, b. 1880; d. 1957, Kettering R.D..

                  ii.       LAURA MARIA AUST, b. 1881; m. ........ BARNETT, 1929, Kettering R.D..

                 iii.       ELIZABETH AUST, b. 1884; d. 1957, Kettering R.D..

                 iv.       NELLY JANE AUST, b. 1886; d. Abt. 1974, Oakham R.D..

                  v.       EVELINE CHARLOTTE AUST, b. 1888; Baptism: 10 November 1889, Corsham, m. GEORGE SIMPKINS, 1917, St.Albans R.D..

                 vi.       HENRY JOHN AUST, b. 1890, Oundle R.D.; d. 1953, Kettering R.D.; m. ETHEL KERRY, 1926, Kettering R.D..

                vii.       ALFRED AUST, b. 1892; d. 1977, Kettering R.D.; m. GLADYS L. E. STAPLETON, 1925.

17.          viii.       WILLIAM JESSE AUST, b. 11 February 1895; d. 1969, Coventry R.D..

Note how much information can be gained - Eveline (My grandmother) was baptised in Corsham 1989, Henry was born in 1890, registered in Oundle. This helps prove when the move took place.
